This #summerofDECA, Nevada took on San Francisco to participate in the DECA Emerging Leader Summit! In the course of three days, chapter and association officers tested their knowledge on dining etiquette, leadership skills, and tips to make their respective DECA locations thrive! Joining the Nevada DECA state officers were Legacy High School members who took on #DECAELS in the Aspire leadership academy!
Officers were able to witness the first event the national officers had to host, bringing a vision of a great future by announcing their plans for the upcoming year! Taking the stage was Ryan Underwood, showing members what it takes to understand their peers and work as a team to create a successful year!
Starting off with some team building activities, officers from all over the country were encouraged to network with other association officers! Nevada had a great time bonding with other states and provinces within the DECA network! These activities were a lead into fun ‘energizers’ which we hope to bring to you at this upcoming SCDC!
DECA After Dark sessions began later on in the day, giving officers the opportunity to learn from DECA leaders with topics such as “Choosing the right college major” and “Running for national office.” Split into 15-minute sessions, members were encouraged to visit as many sessions as they wanted before curfew.
Something useful that we learned was that on your college applications, one should not expand on what DECA is, but what accomplishments you have done in DECA. Have you raised money for an organization through a DECA event? Have you built a community service platform for your chapter? Tell the school you are applying to that important data!
The following day we expanded on our learning with the etiquette luncheon. Officers learned how to correctly pass the salt, set up your plate, and greet guests to the table. Proper manners were key during this activity, and we can safely say now that we are trained in our dining etiquette!
Are you ready for SCDC 2017? Preparation began at DECA ELS! The Nevada DECA state officers worked hard to continue planning your DECA year, with social events and webinar ideas!
That night we took on San Francisco with an amazing bus tour and a night out with our friends California and Oregon DECA on Pier 39. Having the opportunity to see the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and the beautiful city of San Francisco. We definitely built new friendships that will last a lifetime!
The following day, Amy Gallimore engaged us in a DECA dance off, dancing to songs by One Direction to get ourselves pumped for another day of leadership training!
Questions were answered such as “How does one correctly give an award?” and “How do I handle my DECA social media?” Lastly, we learned how to advocate for funding by contacting our state officials. The perfect ending to a DECA weekend!
We hope you have been having a fantastic summer and can’t wait to show you what we have been planning for the 2016-17 year! Are you ready to #ownyourfuture?
