Capitalizing in the Capitol

Last month, the Nevada DECA state officer team had the amazing opportunity to jet set across the country to Washington DC to attend the Emerging Leader Summit (ELS). There they met officers from all around the US, toured the country’s historical monuments, and visited with the state’s legislators to advocate our association. “I’ve never felt so accomplished,” says Valerie Cana, State President, “I can’t wait to see what more our team can do for Nevada DECA!” Each member of the team truly represented our state with pride and poise.

The workshops at the Emerging Leader Summit, presented by TRI Leadership Resources and the national officers, were never short of exciting fun or valuable knowledge. State and chapter members from all across the country had the opportunity to gain vital skills in project management, leadership, networking, and so much more! They also had the chance to see and learn about important aspects of our nation’s history while touring historical national monuments.

This year the state officer team made it a priority in their Program of Work to promote DECA to our local legislators. To take full advantage of our time in the heart of America (aka where many powerful people make decisions about education) we wanted to meet with our legislators personally and talk about ways they can support DECA. After much hard work, phone calls, and emails, the team was successful and was able to meet with five of our six legislators: Senator Harry Reid, Senator Dean Heller, Representative Joe Heck, Representative Dina Titus, and Representative Steven Horsford. Senator Reid’s staff even gave the state officer team a special opportunity to go on a VIP tour of the Capitol Building; a tour our team is sure to always remember!

It was absolutely amazing to hear that each of the legislators we visited supported voting for the Carl Perkins Act, a vital funding resource for Career and Technical Education and CTSO’s. Senator Reid even told us, “I’ve been working with CTE education for the past forty years. I even remember Carl Perkins creating the Act, and I fully support it.”

The Emerging Leader Summit in the Capitol was a 100% mission success for your state officer team! They truly #MadeItCount this #SummerOfDECA! Not only did they spread the word about DECA, but they also gained so much valuable knowledge and information that they cannot wait to share with fellow members in Nevada!

We hope to see you all soon at our upcoming conferences, and maybe next summer we’ll see YOU at the Emerging Leader Summit in sunny Los Angeles, California!
